The Sonaugi

Location & Access

  • Delhi to Sonaugi is 560 km. Driving aficionados can do a 12 hour drive, but an early am start is recommended.
  • You can also break overnight journey in Chandigarh or Bilaspur.
  • If you take the Flight/Shatabdi Express Train to Chandigarh, we can organise a cab pick up from here.
  • In Bilaspur you can stay at Sagar View Hotel. It is a basic and clean place, decent food, not much to write home about. It has worked out with the families we recommended to. We are searching for a warm Homestay enroute.
  • Indian (Airlines) runs the only direct 1-hour Delhi-Kullu flights.
  • Being monopoly sectors the flights may be expensive at a short notice and if planned in advance, it works out inexpensive.
  • Home is less than an hour away from Bhunter Airport – Our MajorDomo Ashwini Tripathi will arrange the pick-ups.
  • Luxury Volvo Buses plying between Delhi and Manali have been found quite efficient. Starting from Delhi around 7 pm, you arrive in Patli-Kuhl by 7 am. A 30 minute cab ride brings you home.

  • Here is a Road Route to the last Tee (PLEASE PRINT, but make sure you don’t read while on the wheel)
  • The route is Delhi – Ambala (By-pass Chandigarh) – Ropar – Kiratpur Sahib  (Climb right here in Himachal).
  • Kiratpur – Swarghat – Bilaspur – Sundernagar – Mandi – Pandoh – Aut.
(Aut is a small busy bazaar after you have crossed the 3 km tunnel). Here you enter the Kullu Valley.
  • Aut to Bhunter (Airport) and onwards to Kulu – just before entering Kulu town, you turn right over Beas Bridge & leave NH 21.
  • At Bhunter Turn Right & Cross the bridge over Beas towards the Left Bank on MDR 29. MDR, for your information, is Main District Road.
  • Be extremely watchful here – you hit a tri-junction (3-rasta) and turn left here to drive on an ARC-Bridge & Toll. Please double check here – if by mistake you go straight you end up in a different valley. LOOK for the arc-bridge on the left.
  • Non-Himachal automobiles are required to pay a Toll here – Rs 10 or so.
  • Drive on the Left Bank up to Naggar and you pass through villages Seobagh, Kias, Arcchandi, Hirni, Ghurr Daud, Laran Kelo.
  • After Laran Kelo you climb to a Right diversion to Naggar. Do NOT take the Left going to Patli-Kuhl.
  • In middle of Naggar bazaar take a steep Right U-turn and drive 9 km on the Naggar-Bijli Mahadev Road.
  • Naggar is the last point from where you can buy your favourite chocolate; shampoo et al. So please stop to buy the essentials at the Lala’s shop.
  • After the Naggar Bazaar the diversion to Bijli Mahadev is very miss-able, so please navigate carefully.
  • After a couple of bends you see a small almost missable right diversion with a Bijli-Mahadev etc sign-board. Please take that.
  • Now you are on a quiet road but the curves are narrow and you go through a dense Deodar (Cedar) jungle. Drive slow here.
  • The moment the valley opens you see a beautiful old village Nashala.
  • After Nashala drive 4 km and then keep your eyes peeled for Right side marker of The Sonaugi Homestead (never mind the spellings).
  • A kuccha motorable track climbs up the right bend towards Sonaugi. This turn is called Thalli Morr – the tricky-looking but motorable track goes to Dhamma Village.
  • Drive only in first gear at under 5 km for less than 750 meters till you again see a steep Right turn indicating again – The Sonaugi Homestead.
  • Please do NOT attempt to turn the car here on this Right.
  • Drive 50 meters ahead to a clearing. Reverse here and now drive back to the lower road.
  • Our team will meet you at the Parking.
  • Best is to talk to Ashwini, (+91 88949 24259) in case of even the hint of a doubt.
  • Another option is to ask him to send someone to Archhandi village (before Naggar) to accompany you in the car – particularly if you arrive after sunset.
